My Child’s First Trip to the Dentist
Tom was 4 when I took him to the dentist for the first time. I was more nervous than him because I was worried that he would be frightened about going to a strange place, and sitting in a big chair with all these foreign tools being prodded into his mouth by a complete stranger. It is enough to make anyone uneasy, let alone a child who has no idea what’s going on.

When Tom arrived, his big round eyes were wide as he took in the smells and sounds of a bustling dental practice. I could only imagine what he was thinking as we were led into a room, and he was told to hop up in the big chair. He grabbed my hand with his small pudgy one that felt sweaty and he looked up at me – his eyes saying ‘why are we here?’
I reassured him that it was okay – the nice lady was going to look inside his mouth to make sure his teeth were growing properly. The Dental assistant (the nice lady) put Tom at easy immediately by showing him that the chair was like a bit of a ride – she moved it up and down, and laid it down and then back up again as a smile spread across his face. She then produced some special glasses that he put on and placed a bib around his neck. She spoke to him in a soft reassuring voice as she explained what was happening and the tools she would be using. Tom felt confident and at ease as the dentist and nurse checked his mouth and told him what a good boy he was. We both walked out happy, me because his first experience had been a success and him because he knew now that the childrens dentist was something that he felt comfortable going to.
